Surf Life Saving Developing Future Leaders

Twenty-five Surf Life Savers headed to the bush for a fear factor style leadership camp at a Meebunn-Bia on the 6th-9th October 2005. Participants from the Hunter to Tweed Heads regions came together for four days of challenge, personal development and fun. These 14-21 year-olds developed valuable life skills such as communication, team building and leadership.

The camp took participants outside their comfort zone with no luxuries of home such as showers and flushing toilets. Participants had to build tents, carry packs and cook meals on a camp fire. They completed a number of challenge and initiative tasks which developed skills in leadership, teamwork, problem solving and communication.

The weekend was a huge success. All participants really enjoyed the experience despite their initial shock and have formed some really strong friendships and support networks. They learnt some valuable life skills which they will use as future leaders in surf lifesaving as well as in their future careers.

Participants also faced personal challenges, with activities such as a high ropes course, the flying fox and abseiling, where they faced their fears and took on things they didn’t believe possible.
